KANDINSKI, Vasily, Russian painter and designer born in 1866 and died in Paris, France, Dec. 17, 1944. He was associated with the Moscow Academy of Art, and for a time he served as director of the Moscow Museum of Pictorial Culture. In 1911 he founded in Munich, in collaboration with Paul Klee (1879-1940), a school of abstract impressionist painting. He also established in 1921, the Russian Academy of Artistic Sciences. From 1922 until 1933 he was an instructor in the Bauhaus group, at Weimar. He then left Germany, thereafter making his home in Paris. His views on painting were set forth in The Art of Spiritual Harmony (1914).
